The former site of a failed YMCA may present a future home for well-to-do renters in Webster Groves.
According to an article in the Webster-Kirkwood Times, interested parties are eying a nearly 1.5-acre plot in the 200 block of E. Lockwood as the site for 51 high-end apartment lofts. The units, which would include studios as well as one-and two-bedroom units, would be part of a five-story edifice that would package them with 3,000 additional square feet of commercial space.
The site has been vacant since the 2015 closure of a YMCA location which had occupied the area since the late 1950s.
The proposed apartment building would include a pool and 89 parking spaces for the lot which abuts the corner of E. Lockwood and Sylvester Avenue. Peace United Church of Christ is on the other side. Developer Sangita Capital Partners said the new structure would be a “luxury living experience” including granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.
A staff report issued on the project has recommended that a necessary rezoning for the development be approved and a public hearing on the matter has been set for the Aug. 7 meeting of the Webster Groves Plan Commission. Action by the city council would need to wait until that body convenes in early September.
